Alloy wheel welding

Please note, as explained with our alloy wheel straightening service, alloy wheel welding repairs require heating the damaged area. The heat will discolour or damage the existing paintwork. This may not be noticeable or concerning when welding the rear of the alloy.

As explaine the process of welding an alloy wheel involves heating the damaged area to apply the weld. On the inside of the wheel this may not be visible but if on the outside then highly likely that the paint finish will be affected. In these cases the recommendation is to have the wheel fully refurbished. The most common wheel damage that needs welding are small cracks.


Often in the back of the wheel, you may not even realise you have a crack, a clue is if you are loosing tyre pressure regularly. As with all wheel repairs the tyre will be remove we will grind out and clean the damaged area and with high grade ali rod refill the alloy wheel. Alloy welding is not easy and alloy wheels are no exception, they demand a high level of expertise and experience, to ensure the wheel performs the way it should do once repaired.

Can You weld alloy wheels? Why do we need a wheel Weld? When should I perform a wheel weld repair?


I am not a welder, never welded alloy, ever, hope to soon, but I think the problem apart from the welding current (I have no idea) is that IMHO you need to heat the wheel a lot before welding and then let it cool down VERY slowly, I think the stress from rapid heating is the issue here, I very much doubt a welded or cracked wheel is a great danger in the real worl they just tend to loose air. TIG welding is common place in aluminium fabrication, but ask a TIG welder from that business to weld your allow wheel rim and he will generally give you an unwelcome answer.


Alloy wheel rims are not made of the best materials and so experience in welding this ever-varied material is key here. Using only high grade ali welding rods our skilled Zurich assured TIG welder is able to repair the vast majority of cracks. We always start with an assessment of the wheel to make sure we are certain of the the damage. Sometimes cracks are accompanied by a buckle and this will be fixed first. Before undertaking any welds, we first use a special UV dye to see just how far the crack has actually gone – as this can often be beyond the site of the naked eye. We’ve heard many people suggest that welding alloy wheels isn’t safe, but it’s very a reliable and effective repair method when done correctly.

Simply welding over the crack wouldn’t be safe, as the corrosion that led to the crack would remain, and this would still be the wheel’s weakest point. The welding process use creates a seal and restores strength to the rim where the crack existed. In our experience these welds last a very long time, and generally are only broken following impact with a pot hole or kerb, the wheels don’t explode or do any weird and wonderful things that the uneducated may try to purvey.
